Project 002 – Arhuaco

Introduction: We are supporting the Arhuaco tribe’s microbiologists in Colombia by providing essential equipment for their research on organic fertilizers and compost.

Context: The Arhuaco tribe, indigenous to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, is known for their deep connection to nature and sustainable agricultural practices. They currently lack advanced equipment necessary to fully explore and enhance their organic fertilization methods, which are crucial for maintaining their traditional, environmentally friendly farming practices.

Opportunity: Equipping the tribe’s microbiologists will enable them to conduct in-depth research, improving the quality and effectiveness of organic fertilizers and compost. This advancement is critical for sustaining their agricultural practices and ensuring food security and soil health.

Aims:

  • Provide advanced microbiological equipment to the Arhuaco tribe.

  • Enhance the research capabilities of the tribe’s microbiologists.

  • Promote sustainable agricultural practices within the tribe and surrounding communities.

Strategy:

  • Identify and procure the necessary microbiological equipment such as microscopes, culture media, and analytical tools.

  • Train tribe members in the use of this equipment through workshops and ongoing support.

  • Facilitate partnerships with academic and research institutions to provide technical assistance and collaborative research opportunities.

Results:

  • Improved quality of organic fertilizers and compost, leading to better crop yields and soil health.

  • Enhanced agricultural productivity and sustainability within the tribe.

  • Strengthened scientific capabilities of the Arhuaco tribe, fostering self-sufficiency and resilience.

Partners:

  • Academic and research institutions providing expertise and training.

  • Suppliers of scientific equipment.
