Project 004 – Hybrida

Introduction: The Hybrida project is dedicated to researching and identifying the most resilient and high-quality coffee hybrid varieties. Located at Guanacaste Farm, this initiative aims to find hybrids that are rust-resistant, climate-resilient, and possess excellent cupping scores and flavor profiles by comparative studies from one plot.

Context: Climate change poses significant challenges to coffee production, with increasing instances of diseases like coffee leaf rust threatening yields and quality. Hybrid coffee varieties, which combine the best traits of different coffee species, offer a promising solution to these challenges. Guanacaste Farm serves as a dedicated research site for planting and evaluating various hybrid varieties under the same conditions.

Opportunity: By experimenting with different hybrid varieties on a single plot, we aim to identify those that not only resist diseases but also thrive in changing climate conditions while delivering superior taste and quality. This project also opens opportunities for collaboration, allowing other researchers and coffee producers to contribute their hybrid varieties for evaluation.

Aims:

  • Identify coffee hybrid varieties that are resistant to coffee leaf rust and other diseases.

  • Evaluate the performance of hybrids under changing climate conditions.

  • Determine the best hybrids based on cupping scores and flavor profiles.

  • Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing within the coffee research community.

Strategy:

  • Plant a variety of hybrids on a dedicated plot at Guanacaste Farm.

  • Conduct regular assessments of plant health, disease resistance, and growth performance.

  • Perform detailed cupping sessions to evaluate the taste and quality of each hybrid.

  • Collaborate with coffee researchers and producers to introduce and test new hybrid varieties.

Results:

  • Development of a database of high-performing hybrid varieties.

  • Identification of hybrids that are best suited for resilience against climate change and disease.

  • Enhanced understanding of the flavor profiles associated with different hybrids.

  • Creation of a network of collaborators contributing to and benefiting from the research.

Partners:

  • Coffee research institutions and universities.

  • Local and international coffee producers and farmers.

  • NGOs and organizations focused on sustainable agriculture and coffee production.

  • Suppliers of hybrid coffee plants and agricultural technology.
